Thomas F. Gordon's 1834 Gazetteer of the State of New Jersey: "Stony Hill, extends from the north branch of the river Raritan, in Bernard and Bridgewater t-ships, through Warren t-ship, in Somerset co., into Essex co., in the form of a crescent; formed of trap rock, on old red sandstone base.
