Dear Friends of History, Abraham Lincoln reminded his contemporaries in the midst of great crisis: "Fellow-citizens, we cannot escape history." I therefore gladly announce the launch of a new blog, NJ History Watch, which I hope to update as frequently as possible in order to keep our community of interest better informed. Now is the time to advocate for change in the status of our undervalued historic sites, which have much to contribute to our sense of well being and community. Demolition by neglect of significant remnants of our past is nothing other than an act of cultural vandalism, depriving present and future generations of a memorable and meaningful experience of the hard- learned lessons of history. And realizing the potential economic returns of heritage tourism need not reduce our connection to the past to mere nostalgic entertainment. On the contrary, authenticity and a regard for the whole truth should define the visitor experience. Those who wish to participate in building appreciation for NJ's storied places are most welcome at http://njhistorywatch.blogspot.com Best regards, Kevin Wright
