The earliest reference to the Penelope Stout story I recall is Samuel Smith's 1765 History of New Jersey. Since recollection of details dim within 100 hours of an event let alone 100 years, the Stout story had a century to be colored by fantasy, exaggeration, mistaken facts and embellishment. It is a beautiful legend surrounding her factual existence, but one may strain his credibility by repeating or relying too heavily on the common account. Randall Gabrielan
