JUNIOR JOHNSON TO OVERSEE #3 CAR TRANSFER AT MUSEUM OF HISTORY
You are invited to the N.C. Museum of History on Tuesday, Nov. 24,
at 10:15 a.m. to hear brief remarks by legendary NASCAR driver and owner Robert
"Junior" Johnson. He will be available for interviews afterward.
Johnson will be at the museum to oversee the transfer of his 1963
Chevrolet Impala #3 to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, opening this spring in
Charlotte. In 2006 he generously loaned his white Chevy to the N.C. Sports Hall
of Fame for exhibit at the Museum of History. This famous car, which Johnson
drove during the 1963 NASCAR season, has been on exhibit in Raleigh for nearly
three years and has attracted thousands of visitors.
Junior Johnson was inducted into the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame in
1992. "He has always supported the organization, and we are honored that he
loaned this car to us," says Don Fish, executive director of the N.C. Sports
Hall of Fame. "We congratulate him on being one of the first inductees into the
NASCAR Hall of Fame, and we know that visitors to this new facility will be
just as excited to see his #3 car on exhibit there."
Adds Joe Porter, chief curator at the Museum of History, "This #3
Chevy is the only vehicle Junior Johnson has from his racing career. The museum
and N.C. Sports Hall of Fame have been very proud to have it in Raleigh for an
extended time, and we appreciate Johnson's generosity."
Johnson and his crew built the Chevy in Florida, before the 1963
Daytona 500, where he ran the fastest qualifying lap. Later that year, he won
seven races and captured 10 pole positions in car #3. Johnson won 50 NASCAR
races as a driver during his career. While he was a team owner, his cars
dominated the Winston Cup circuit for years.
