Wagenaar Executive Director The Historical Society of Michigan Phone: 517-324-1828 wagenaar@hsmichigan.org Michigan History magazine names new editors EAST LANSING, Mich., Oct. 13, 2009 - The Historical Society of Michigan is pleased to name Patricia A. Majher the new editor of Michigan History magazine and Douglas D. Fisher the assistant editor. Majher has been the assistant director of the Michigan Women's Historical Center & Hall of Fame in Lansing since 2007. In that capacity, she served as curator, collections manager, exhibit developer and museum educator. Prior to that, she served as the public relations and marketing officer for Mackinac State Historic Parks, the registrar specialist at The Henry Ford museum in Dearborn and curator of the Hack House Museum in Milan. She also spearheaded the University of Michigan College of Engineering's alumni magazine. She has a long history of writing and editing as a freelancer for various publications, including Michigan History. Majher, an Ann Arbor resident, holds a master's degree in historic preservation from Eastern Michigan University and a bachelor's degree in journalism, broadcasting and film from Central Michigan University. She has won awards from the American Advertising Federation, the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations, and the Society for Technical Communication. Her book about Michigan women in the U.S. Lighthouse Service will be published by the University of Michigan Press in 2010. She will be in charge of all editorial content of Michigan History magazine. Fisher, most recently a copy editor and graphic designer at The Ann Arbor News, has worked in the editorial departments of daily newspapers for the past 11 years. Prior to his work as a designer, he won writing awards from the Midwest Society of Professional Journalists, the Virginia Press Association, the Gannett Co., and the Associated Press Managing Editors of Pennsylvania. A Whitmore Lake resident, Fisher will graduate in December from Wayne State University with a master's degree in history. His research focus has been on Michigan prior to statehood. He also holds a bachelor's degree in history and journalism from Central Michigan University. In April, Fisher contributed to a public symposium on "Revolutionary Detroit" at the Detroit Historical Museum Wayne State student papers from the event, including Fisher's, have been compiled into a book, "Revolutionary Detroit: Profiles in Cultural Change, 1760-1805," which will be released in November. Fisher also assisted with the editing and proofing of the text, and compiled the bibliography. In addition to editorial duties, Fisher will direct the circulation, advertising and marketing operations of Michigan History. "Ms. Majher and Mr. Fisher are outstanding additions to the Historical Society of Michigan staff and bring extensive and complimentary talents to Michigan History magazine" said Executive Director Larry Wagenaar. "They have the skills and experience that will ensure the magazine will continue to have superb content and be a high quality product. They will also work with us to bring some new and exciting features to Michigan History magazine." Due to State of Michigan budget cuts, Michigan History magazine was transferred to The Historical Society of Michigan on Oct. 1. Michigan History, first published in 1917, will continue as bi-monthly publication under the nonprofit organization. The Historical Society of Michigan is the state's oldest cultural organization, founded in 1828 by territorial governor Lewis Cass and explorer Henry Schoolcraft. It focuses on education, publications, conferences, recognition programs and support for local historical organizations.
