Call for papers in a Session of the IPHS Conference Istanbul 2010 http://www.iphs2010.org/ Session title Tourism, Place identity and Urban Transformations Session organisers Heleni Porfyriou (CNR-ICVBC-Rome) National Research Council – Institute for the Conservation and Enhancement of Cultural Heritage Hicran Topcu Campagna (Architect, PhD in Restoration) Session abstract The relationship between identity and transformations is often the focus of interest for researches regarding the urban place. The method of analysis is mainly based on the definition of “urban identity” concept. If it is perceived as a static entity that has already completed its process of evolution, the interaction between any kind of urban intervention and the identity is questioned in a dual perspective of conflict and harmony. On the other hand, if it is a dynamic entity with an open evolution process, interventions of the present day and future also become a part of the identity. Today, the place identity concept has acquired an even wider meaning, comprising both the tangible and intangible heritage as well as uses, meanings and values associated with the place from both the visitors’ and the residents’ point of view. The theme proposed for this session is actually a further extension of the discussions held within the project entitled “Preserving places. Managing mass tourism, urban conservation and quality of life in historic centres” being financed as part of the EU’s Culture Program (2007-2013). The main objective of the project carried out by 8 partners from 7 European* countries, was mainly to propose best practices and guidelines for a sustainable management of the historic city centers undergoing the negative impacts of mass tourism, and to raise the awareness of the main stakeholders involved in the management and conservation of these historic cores. Here, it is intended to deepen the discussions regarding the relationship between tourism, place identity and transformation, and to enlarge the network already initiated by the project. It is expected that networks help to diffuse the best practices, which, in the long term, would turn into policies. The proposed session intends to approach the subject on a theoretical and empirical way. The questions treated may refer to the methods and analytical procedures used for the definition and monitoring of the place identity in relation with transformation process. The papers instead offering an empirical input may present specific case studies or review the debate on the issues above mentioned. The session is open to all historic periods and geographical contexts. The session may comprise up to six papers. If you are interested in participating in this session please send us a mail with a short abstract by November 27, 2009. The deadline for the submission of the entire Session on the conference website is November 30, 2009.
