Dear Michael,

I think Marcia Inhorn's latest book, "The New Arab Men: Emergent
Masculinities, Technologies, and Islam in the Middle East" (Princeton,
2012) is what you're looking for. My experience with students (non-English
speakers) shows it's also very readable. Her previous work on health (and
especially fertility) may also be useful for you as she discusses both
male and female attitudes and responses to fertility problems.
