Just a quick reminder that this coming Saturday is THE DISSIDENT FOLK & ARTS FESTIVAL 2009, occuring again in Beacon NY. If you are in the area attending one of the anti-war demonstrations in the afternoon, please save up some of your fighting activist energy and bring it to us! Let's sing out the danger of the military industral complex as well as the need for solidarity enough to combat the Fightened Right's ongoing offensives. Hope to see you there, John > ****************************************************** Beacon, NY: THE DISSIDENT FOLK & ARTS FESTIVAL 2009 The annual Dissident Folk & Arts Festival will return for its fourth season to Beacon's Howland Cultural Center on October 17. The Festival ‘s theme this year will be LOOKING FORWARD: IN PRAISE OF ACTIVISM, and its goal is to act as a bridge between socially-conscious arts and progressive philosophy, toward political awareness and social change. Performers: -Celebrated progressive Hip-Hop artists READNEX POETRY SQUAD, hailing from New Paltz and Newburgh, stand as this year’s headliners. This group of four young poets of color offers a revolutionary brand of Rap, bringing to the Hip-Hop culture a deep political awareness and a powerful message of unity and pride. ReadNex Poetry Squad have toured the nation and Europe, bringing their message to embattled, poverty-stricken areas and incorporating poetry workshops into their performance agenda to offer creativity to working class youth. The group has toured with Rage Against the Machine and performed in the Rap Against Racism and Rock Against Racism festivals. ww.myspace.com/readnex - Alternative Protest Song ensemble THE FLAMES OF DISCONTENT (Festival organizer John Pietaro on vocals/electric banjo and drumkit, and lead bassist Laurie Towers, both Beaconites) will be performing several pieces, including an improvisation based on particularly radical poetry by Woody Guthrie. The duo will also serve as a rhythm section for many other performers. www.flamesofdiscontent.org -Folk expansionists HOPE MACHINE (Fred Gillen Jr, Steve Kirkman and others), from Peekskill, is a group that began life as a Woody Guthrie tribute band but has since widened its repertoire while continuing to perform protest-oriented music. Hope Machine has performed at the Clearwater and Falcon Ridge festivals, among others throughout the region and beyond. www.myspace.com/hopingmachines -Beacon’s ALVIN BELL/CHRIS RUHE FREEDOM SONG REVIEW (veteran Gospel singer meets the busy songster). Bell and Ruhe return to the Dissident Fest for another installment of their church-heavy music of social and spiritual change The band will be comprised of various area musicians, with Chris leading the music and sharing vocals with powerhouse singer Alvin out front. www.chrisruhe.com -Noted percussionist/poet/vocalist RAFAEL FIGUEROA, also from Beacon, will offer an exciting fusion of Latin, Jazz and R&B sounds in support of his unique blend of free-form verse. He will be joined by a varied ensemble to create a world beat mix for today’s turbulent times. -Woodstock’s GREG ENGLESSON AKA “MR.
