As I mentioned, I'm an artist and have been contacted by colleagues in New York who are publishing a one-off newspaper relating to artists' unions and other efforts by artists to organize to improve their lot. The content of the newspaper will be of excellent quality -- at least, I've found it fascinating -- including articles by writers for ArtForum and The New York Times as well as by artists and arts organizers. We are interested in the possibility of creating an art exhibition and/ or event relating to the launch of this issue. Subjects relating to organized labor have been out of fashion for long enough that many people, especially younger people, no longer know much about them. Among other things, I'd appreciate any help you can provide in contacting people with expertise on any of the following topics: The HISTORY: of unions, coops or the like. Past or current LAW: re- unions, etc., or labor in general. The ECONOMICS: economic history as it relates to any of the foregoing (e.g., I believe a lot of organizational efforts by artists and others got started during the Great Depression, so for that as well as other reasons, the economic p.o.v. might shed light). ART WORKS: re- any of the foregoing (e.g., paintings, posters, films, happenings re- past or current organizational efforts, etc.). For our purposes, of course, it would be great to find resources or people with expertise on these subjects as they relate to artists (broadly defined); but I'm sure there are many experts who could be extremely helpful even if they haven't focussed particularly on efforts by artists. Also pls note, although I do have in mind the possibility of in-person lectures or panels, input from more far-flung experts is welcome, and it might be possible for them to participate in events by videoconference or the like.
