H-Judaic is saddened to learn of the passing of Prof. Gideon Goldenberg, emeritus professor of linguistics at the Hebrew University, and one of the world's foremost experts in Semitic linguistics. Winner of the Israel Prize for language sciences in 1993, Prof. Goldenberg published pioneering scholarship on Amharic, Syriac, and other languages. His major articles were collected in Studies in Semitic Linguistics:* *Selected Writings by Gideon Goldenberg (Jerusalem, Magnes Press, 1998). A festschrift in his honor (STUDIES IN GENERAL AND SEMITIC LINGUISTICS IN HONOR OF GIDEON GOLDENBERG) appeared in 2007, where Prof. Goldenberg was described as "one of the leading contemporary scholars of general linguistics and clearly the foremost living scholar of Semitic linguisitics. Over decades, since he began his foray into the field of Semitic languages, he has been a guide for his pupils and peers alike. The virtually unrivaled depth and breadth of his knowledge have been a never-ending font of inspiration and a cause for admiration for all who have ever known him and learned from him." We extend deepest condolences to the Goldenberg family. Many thanks to Dena Ordan for alerting us to Prof. Goldenberg's passing. -- JONATHAN D. SARNA Chair, H-Judaic --
