Sent: Sunday, October 25, 2009 5:37 AM Subject: Research Degrees in the History of Jewish Law Research Degrees in the History of Jewish Law Professor Bernard Jackson has now retired from The University of Manchester and has taken up a part-time appointment at Liverpool Hope University, with a view to promoting postgraduate research. Liverpool Hope University has established distance learning research degrees at both M.Phil (minimum 1 year FT, 2 years PT) and PhD (minimum 2 years FT, 4 years PT). Supervisions are largely via e-mail, with a minimum of one visit to the Liverpool Hope campus per year. Students submitting an MPhil may subsequently apply for admission to a PhD, and may be granted partial credit for their MPhil registration period, at the discretion of the Graduate Studies Committee. Candidates for both MPhil and PhD are normally expected to have an MA qualification, but direct admission to MPhil from BA is possible, depending on the level of the BA (normally expected to be equivalent to a First Class Honours degree in the UK). Doctoral students will be registered as PhD/M initially and will be upgraded to full PhD after passing a Confirmation of Registration Scrutiny. Students interested in working with Professor Jackson on this basis should e-mail him at Jacksob@hope.ac.uk, with an outline proposal, consisting of (a) A clear identification of the research question (b) An analysis of its significance - not least by identifying gaps in previous research that this proposal aims to fill. (c) A tentative outline (d) Details of the proposed methodology (e) An indicative bibliography. Further administrative details of the scheme will be sent by Professor Jackson on request.
