From: "rachel rojanski" <rojanski@research.haifa.ac.il> Call For Papers ~ The Cultural Geography of Modern Yiddish The University of Haifa, Israel, 24-26 December 2006 ~ The Department of Jewish History at the University of Haifa,~ Beit Shalom Aleichem in Tel-Aviv, and The Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor announce an international conference on The Cultural Geography of Modern Yiddish. ~ This conference will consist of two parts. The first will take place at the University of Haifa on 24-26 December 2006 and will focus on: ~ Centers of Yiddish Culture in the Twentieth Century The second will be held at Ann Arbor in April 2007 and will deal with displacement and transformation in Yiddish cultural production (Details on this conference will be published in September). ~ Those interested in participating in the sessions to be held in Haifa (24-26 December 2006) are invited to submit proposals for papers focusing on one or more of the following themes: 1. The Emergence of Yiddish Cultural Centers: ~The Ideological and Political Context; 2. The concept of "Homeland" as a Signifier in the Shaping of ~Yiddish Cultural Thought; 3. Yiddish: A Minority Discourse Facing a ~Dominant Culture; 4. The Concepts of "High” and "Low" in Yiddish Culture; 5. The Role of Newspapers and Periodicals in the Development of ~Modern Yiddish Culture; 6. The Interrelationship between the Press, Literature and Theater; 7.
