We are saddened to learn of the passing, in Jerusalem, of Prof. Shmuel
Safrai, Emeritus Professor of Jewish history at the Hebrew University,
and one of the world's greatest experts on the era of the Second
Temple.  His numerous publications on the Temple, the Mishnah, the
liturgy, the early synagogue, and more stand as a monument to his many
decades of productive scholarship.  Prof. Safrai passed away in his
sleep in Jerusalem at age 84.
