The Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context: Shifting
Asymmetries in Cultural Flows" at the University of Heidelberg offers a
scholarship for one PhD student or postdoctoral researcher to be awarded for a
period of two years with the possibility of extension for an additional year.
The position will be affiliated with project D14, "Language Flows in Pre-Modern
East-Asia: the Case of Literary Chinese," which explores the spread and use of
Literary Chinese as a high prestige linguistic variety in pre-modern East Asia.
Research proposals may tackle any aspect of the phenomenon, including
institutional or cultural, but preference will be given to topics with a strong
linguistic focus.
The candidates should have a MA or PhD with a focus on East Asia, excellent
knowledge of Classical Chinese, as well as of at least one other East Asian
language. Questions as well as applications (including a CV, a description of
research interests in their relation to the project, as well as a writing
sample) should be directed to Nicolae Cristian Statu:

Interviews will start immediately until positions are filled.
