Sent: Monday, October 26, 2009 Subject: Query: Women Marines of WWI I am researching a group of bold women who joined the Marine Corps in World War I. We know a total of 305 joined, but even Headquarters Marine Corps does not have a complete list of these trailblazers. I have so far gotten about 260 names and am compiling a bit more of their individual histories. They were all already very skilled secretaries and enlisted at six points across the country. One of those points was Indianapolis. Does anyone have some information on the women who entered from Indianapolis? Perhaps newspaper articles or even recruiting records that may have been kept locally. They entered primarily in August 1918 and some as late as September. They were mostly over eighteen and had to pass exams and interviews, having skills in dictation, stenography, and typing. Sara Phoenix Deputy Historian Women Marines Association
