Centre for the Interdisciplinary Study of Sexuality and Gender in Europe (CISSGE) University of Exeter Annual Conference Call for Papers ‘Gender, Agency and Violence: European Perspectives from Medieval Times to the Present Day’ (to be held: IGRS, London: 18th and 19th March 2010) Papers are invited for a two-day conference that explores the cultural impact and the role of men and women who stand out in terms of the acts of violence they employ, whether directed against a community as a whole; against individuals; or explicitly against the opposite sex. Papers consider whether such (for example historical, mythical, artistic or fictional) characters who cross accepted boundaries are indicative of particular periods of time and / or pursue a personal agenda. While in recent years, studies of women as victims and as perpetrators have increased in number, this conference is concerned with both men and women as violent agents. The conference takes an interdisciplinary approach and seeks to establish potential patterns across times, genres and boundaries. It pursues how violent men and women mark the long-term memory of communities and to what degree male and female acts of violence allow for comparisons in terms of their treatment in society. Other considerations include – means, types and images of violence – the importance of violent characters as potential role-models or how they act as deterrents – the promotion of ideas or change through unconventional methods – the cross-cultural influence of violent individuals A selection of papers will be published. __ For further details please contact **by 31 October 2009** : Dr Ulrike Zitzlsperger School of Arts, Languages and Literatures Queen’s Building Exeter University Exeter EX4 4QH u.c.zitzlsperger@exeter.ac.uk
