We just started using Moodle in middle school for 2 main purposes: a homework calendar and a repository for resources (handouts, links, etc.). It's been very helpful for students. As a Moodle administrator/tech coordinator/history teacher, I've found several other features very helpful. In no particular order: 1. Forums -- for extending class discussions, getting feedback from students, giving the quiet students a place to talk... 2. Embedded video -- putting good videos from YouTube (and elsewhere) on the course page, which can be used as a conversation starter. 3. "Journals" -- personal reflection for the student on topics. Only seen by the student and the teacher. 4. Graphics -- I've recently posted political cartoons for discussion, as well as the painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware for a discussion on mythology and propaganda. 5. Wikis -- good space for collaborative work. There are many many more features, but I use these regularly. I don't see Moodle as a good social networking tool; you might look at Elgg for that, or even Ning. I'd be happy to discuss further with you if you'd like.
