We are interested in candidates with a research focus in such fields as Muslim thought, religious practice, Islamic history, social dynamics, and/or political movements in Africa. The appointment will be made jointly between the Department and the Center, both of which are located within the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Required qualifications include: a Ph.D. in a relevant field; significant research experience in sub-Saharan Africa; and a strong record or substantial promise of teaching and scholarly publication on Islam in Africa. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively across disciplinary boundaries with faculty members in various departments and colleges. They are also expected to teach introductory c! ! ourses, in addition to more advanced undergraduate and graduate classes in their field. Knowledge of an African language is highly desirable. If the applicant does not have a degree in religion, familiarity with methods and theories in the discipline is required. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience. The UF Center for African Studies (CAS) is a federally-funded Title VI National Resource Center. CAS draws on over 100 faculty affiliates to maintain a dynamic program of scholarly activities related to Africa. Founded in 1946, the Department of Religion is the second oldest religion department among Americas' public universities and one of the strongest. Its faculty members are particularly well-known for their interdisciplinary approach and cross-campus collaborations in the humanities and the social and natural sciences. The University of Florida, a member of the Association of American Universities, is a comprehensive public research university encompassing virtually all academic and professional disciplines. Its beautiful 2,000-acre campus is located within the city of Gainesville, a diverse community of over 100,000 people.
