Hausa (and then Wikipedia) Dear subscribers. My name is Siebrand Mazeland, and I am involved in translatewiki.net[2], a localisation project for Free and Open Source Software. In our project products like MediaWiki (used by Wikipedia), MantisBT, OpenStreetMap and more projects are localised. I am contracted for one day per week by the Wikimedia Foundation[1], the hosting organisation for the Wikipedia projects. My focus for that assignment will be trying to get the localisation for the 50 most spoken languages in the world to a higher level. Hausa is one of those. Hausa is in place 41 on the list of languages with the most speakers in the world[4], and MediaWiki has no translations into Hausa whatsoever. We think this may be one of the main reasons why the Hausa Wikipedia, potentially a very valuable online source of information for Hausa speakers now, but for certain in the future as internet penetration under speakers will grow, is hardly growing and getting very few page views. I would like to request to you to help me find enthousiastic speakers of Hausa that may be willing to contribute some time to translate (a part of) MediaWiki into Hausa. We think this may help the language gain (further) traction on the internet. I, or another volunteer of translatewiki.net, will be happy to help the volunteers get started and help them overcome any hurdle they may find contributing to the Hause MediaWiki localization.
