The Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at New York University is pleased to announce a book party on Tuesday, April 15, at 6:30 PM, to celebrate the publication of /Urbane Revolutionary: C. L. R. James and the Struggle for a New Society/ (University Press of Mississippi, 2008), by Frank Rosengarten, professor emeritus of Italian and comparative literature at the City University of New York. (The Tamiment Library is located on the 10^th floor of NYU's Bobst Library, 70 Washington Square South (at the corner of LaGuardia Place). There will be light refreshments, and autographed copies of /Urbane Revolutionary/ will be available for sale at a 20% discount. C. L. R. James (1901-1989), was a leading Afro-Caribbean Marxist and Pan-Africanist intellectual, best known for his prescient writings on black nationalism and culture, including /Black Jacobins:/ T/oussaint L'Ouverture and the San Domingo Revolution/ (1938), and /Beyond a Boundary/ (1963), his seminal study of the sport of cricket. Rosengarten traces C.L.R. James' intellectual and political development, examining in depth three facets of James's work: his interpretation and use of Marxist, Trotskyist, and Leninist concepts; his approach to Caribbean and African struggles for independence in the 1950s and 1960s; and his branching into prose fiction, drama, and literary criticism. Rosengarten also analyzes James's previously under-explored relationships with women and feminism. With its extensive use of unpublished letters, private correspondence, papers and other documents, /Urbane Revolutionary/ provides fresh insights into the work of one of the twentieth century's most important intellectuals and activists.
