Culture in Weimar Germany, Jerusalem (16.11.2009 - 18.11.2009) Date: Wednesday, November 04, 2009 16:06 PM International Conference Challenging the Concept of the „Other“: Jewish and German Culture in Weimar Germany Monday-Wednesday, November, 16-18, 2009 At The Van Leer Jerusalem Institute 43 Jabotinsky St., Jerusalem http://rosenzweig.huji.ac.il The conference aims at investigating the dynamic relations between "self” and "other" as manifest in the literature and related arts produced by Germans and Jews in Weimar Germany, at a time when modernism reached its peak concomitantly problematizing well entrenched conceptions of "subject," "tradition," and "artistic value." From today's perspective, these oeuvres, comparatively viewed, apparently destabilize notions such as “other” and “identity,” insiders and outsiders. The conference will engage with alternatives to this conceptual framework, as they emerge from the partially unaware parallels between the discussed works. The conference is organized by Dr. Karin Neuburger and a cooperation between the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, the Institute for Middle and Eastern European Cultures, the Thyssen Foundation and the Franz Rosenzweig Minerva Research Center at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
