_Politische Schriften Goerderlers_ Date: Wednesday, July 5, 2006 Readers of my review of Sabine Gillmann und Hans Mommsen, eds., _Politische Schriften und Briefe Carl Friedrich Goerdelers_ may be puzzled by Hans Mommsen's response that it had "several crude mistakes" which he does not specify, and that it was "utterly misleading". I disagree, of course, with Mommsen´s view that Goerdeler "supported a dissimilatory antisemitism." Mommsen concedes that Goerdeler made "oppositional moves after the November pogrom and the failure of the appeasement policy after March 1939," but he does not acknowledge Goerdeler´s continuous opposition to the National Socialist regime in the matter of its treatment of Jews from 1933, and that, before the pogrom, Goerdeler had warned the British government of the more brutal persecution of the Jews that was looming, thus committing what was then Landesverrat and punishable by death. When the full-scale murder campaign against the Jews began in 1941, Goerdeler desperately, and naively, cast about for alternative "solutions" - alternatives to murder. He is still being denounced for this as having supported "dissimilatory antisemitism". But actions have greater weight than a mentality surmised by way of associating Goerdeler with "the tradition of the German conservatives". Hans Mommsen is entitled to deploring my review. His response to it might have been more interesting if he had attempted to disprove any of the points I had made.
