Sent: 08/10/09 Subject: Jack Kirby Dear Colleagues, I write to pass along the sad news that Jack Temple Kirby died unexpectedly last Thursday August 6. Professor Kirby was W. E. Smith Professor of History at Miami University Ohio. Many will know him from his books Poquosin: A Study of Rural Landscape and Society and his Bancroft prize winning Mockingbird Song: Ecological Landscapes of the South. I did not know professor Kirby, who retired to Florida before I came to Miami University. But I can report that he was genuinely liked and respected by colleagues and students. Regards, Kevin C.Armitage Kevin C. Armitage Assistant Professor Western Program 111 Peabody Hall Miami University Oxford, Ohio 45056 http://www.kansaspress.ku.edu/armnat.html
