Dear Lesley, This is a fascinating topic, especially in light of recent efforts by archeologists and historians to re-excavate that same landscape. For an masterful discussion of the cultural meaning of the place, see: George L. Mosse, "The Appropriate of Nature," in Fallen Soldiers: Reshaping the Memory of the World Wars. Ian Miller Harvard University From: Lesley Rains lar321@psu.edu Date: 11/19/2009 9:29 AM >>> Subject: Landscape restoration (19th and 20th centuries) I am currently shaping a research project that asks about the restoration of the countryside around the Western Front during (and after) the First World War. I am looking for monographs that discuss the broader history of landscape restoration in Europe in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I'm already familiar with works such as Marcus Hall's Earth Repair and Hugh Clout's After the Ruins. If anyone can make any additional recommendations, I'd really appreciate it. I can read French and Dutch. Feel free to email me directly at lar321@psu.edu.
