Hi Thomas--I didn't see this note I sent yesterday appear on the listserv yet, but I have seen some items that were sent in later than this, so thought I might re-send this to you. Actually, I've updated this note given the 1960 find reported by Thomas Andrews, so if my earlier version is still in the queue, can you replace it with what's below? thanks, Kate Since both Devra Kleiman and John Seidensticker are Zoo colleagues of mine, I've just asked them about their recollections on this interesting topic. John recalls that he first heard the phrase used by Michael Soule in a meeting at the National Zoo, shortly before he and Devra did that Shaller book review. John doesn't know if Mike had published the phrase previously. John adds that "In those days Mike was around quite a lot thinking about deep ecology." Devra also wonders if John Eisenberg might have coined the term [or revived it? given the 1960 cite], in which case, it might appear in one of Eisenberg's books, such as Mammalian Radiations. She also suggests it might be interesting for someone to see if Schaller used the phrase himself in the panda book.
