The Australian National University, College of Asia and the Pacific, presents an international conference on "Race, Encounters and the Constitution of Human Difference in Oceania" on January 20-22, 2010, in the Coombs Building, The Australian National University, Canberra, ACT. This conference will showcase the results of the Australian Research Council-funded project on the history of the Euro-American science of race and encounters between indigenous people and outsiders in Oceania--spanning Australia, the Pacific Islands, New Guinea, New Zealand, and maritime Southeast Asia. Themes include the application of racial theories, impact of local agency on outsiders, and the influence of scientific knowledge. Keynote speakers include Warwick Anderson, Michael Bravo and Rainer Buschmann.
