Regarding "poslednaia vremena": could it be Metropolitan Illarion? The theme of the last hour is quite prominent in his sermon. It may also be a good idea to check Floria’s book Skazaniia o nachale slavianskoi pismennosti. Alternatively, Klykov could have easily “improved” the quote from PVL with a little help from somebody who knows Church Slavonic. The same words, with slightly different spelling, are in the Riazan 2001 edition of Letopis' po spisku Lavrentiia (p. 27), and also in the Nikon Chronicle (PSRL 9, 1965 ed., p97). (I do not think that this passage is in either Russkii khronograf or Stepennaia kniga.) So Prof. Steindorff is correct for the likely original inspiration in PVL for the first part The second part -- iezhe v" poslednaia vremena predano byst' vashego radi spaseniia -- sounds to me quite Apostlic (i.e., Eph 1:13, "gospel of your salvation" -- and "given for your/our salvation" is standard homiletic -- that's the best I can do. cheers to all .. d goldfrank reply to: From: Brian Bennett [mailto:bbennett@niagara.edu] Sent: 05 November 2009 18:00 To: Early Slavic Studies Subject: RE: query about inscription Thank you for your quick response regarding the inscription. I checked Yandex as well. Perhaps I'm missing something (not for the first time)... I realize there is a similar line in the PVL under the year 898. But I cannot find the _ exact_ wording of the inscription in print or online versions. And yet I would be surprised if the sculptor Klykov invented the variant on his own. If you don't mind, please forward the relevant link (off-list: to avoid further public demonstration of my incompetence).
