If you are interested in consulting original materials, can I suggest
you contact my colleague Julian Pooley at Surrey Heritage
(shs@surreycc.gov.uk). Surrey Heritage cares for the records of many of
the mental health hospitals of the county (which has more than any other
county in England), and these include letters of appeal to support the
hospitals (directed at parents and the greater public), letters of
report, and patients' letters.
Julian is also conducting ongoing catalogue enhancement with former
staff and patients, and may know of references to letter writing in
these testimonies.
