2011 SHAFR CONFERENCE – PANELISTS SOUGHT I would like to put together a panel for the 2011 SHAFR conference that examines US relations with Southeast Asia in the immediate post World War II period (1945-1950). I envision this panel to focus on the problems arising from the liberation of formerly colonized territories and to do so in a comparative fashion, e.g. one paper on Indochina, one on the Philippines, etc. In my own research I examine the Indonesian war of independence in an international context, focusing on Dutch-British-American relations. Given the meeting’s theme of “Waging War, Making Peace, Crossing Borders,” I suggest participants give special attention to the relevance of wartime experiences for both postwar US foreign policy makers and decolonization movements in Southeast Asia. If you are interested in participating in this panel, either as presenter or as a chair/commentator, please feel free to contact me.
