H-Diplo members: I'm looking for one more paper for a panel to the SHAFR conference, tentatively titled "Crossing Trans-Atlantic Boundaries in the Early American Period, 1780-1815." One paper examines Virginia's desire to establish land and water boundaries in the Southern part of the state through treaties with other countries, especially Spain, during the Constitutional ratification debates of 1788. The second paper focuses on the XYZ affair and the intersection between the boundaries of executive authority, foreign policy, domestic public opinion, and an emerging American national identity in 1798. I will serve as Chair and Commentator. Of course, if someone has a paper proposal from a bit earlier or a bit later, that should also work. Please send possible paper proposals to me at tuddacj@state.gov<mailto:tuddacj@state.gov>. Thanks Dr. Chris Tudda Historian Declassification and Publishing Division Office of the Historian Department of State (202) 663-1133 (ph) (202) 663-1289 (fax) tuddacj@state.gov
