National Security Archive Update, October 29, 2009 20 Years After the Fall of the Berlin Wall GWU to Host Week-long Commemoration of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and Collapse of the Eastern Bloc Washington, DC, October 29, 2009 - Beginning Monday, November 2nd, George Washington University is hosting a week of events to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and collapse of the Eastern Bloc. The week kicks off at Die Vereinigte Kirche (The United Church, 1920 G St., NW) with speakers and a candlelight procession evoking the spirit of the peaceful protests in Leipzig, East Germany, that led up to the fall of the Wall. The procession will lead to GWU's Gelman Library for the opening of two exhibits directly related to the revolutions of 1989. A half-day symposium on November 4th will feature distinguished panelists from ambassadors to academics presenting their expert views on the fall of the Wall and the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. The National Security Archive's Svetlana Savranskaya and Thomas Blanton will host a panel discussion on "The US and USSR: New Perspectives" (10:15am - 11:15am, Gelman Library, Room 207). Three film screenings will depict the struggles of living in the Eastern Bloc and the historical events that brought down the Wall. Events culminate on the actual anniversary, November 9th, with an outdoor multimedia installation and a "Tear Down this Wall" cake party on GWU's Kogan Plaza.
