Gutenberg University Mainz International Summer Academy July 23 to August 6, 2006 National Socialism: Introduction, Controversies, Perspectives Under the academic direction of Professor Dr. Michael Kissener, the International Summer Academy offers 25 excellent young early-stage researchers an intensive, problem-oriented introduction to the history of National Socialism, to the controversies involved in research in this field, as well as to the perspectives for such research. The Academy addresses itself to an international public of doctoral candidates, graduates and students with at least an especially good BA degree or its academic equivalent. It prepares participants to develop and effectively conduct research in the history of National Socialism. A four-day excursion to Berlin integrated in the program provides, through visits to memorials and specialized museums, an introduction to the central (memorial) sites of the Nazi regime and introduces participants to the research scene through visits to important research and service facilities. Professors and instructors recognized internationally as experts in the history of National Socialism will be involved in the Summer Academy. They will be responsible for the intensive individual advising of the program's participants. The Academy will take place in the Ebernburg Castle in Bad Muenster am Stein near Mainz. This ambience allows for intensive work in a relaxed atmosphere with a cultural supporting program. English and German enjoy equal standing as languages of the Academy. Participants will receive a certificate of participation. They may in addition earn 10 ECTS points by submitting a research paper after attending the course. The Academy is financially supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Costs: 200 Euro program fees, including travel costs to Berlin and for the excursion program; 200 Euro full board and lodging (bed and breakfast in Berlin). Participants from abroad may receive travel cost subsidies and in some cases grants.
