I have come across Inspiration House twice while researching African American artists in Washington, DC, but hadn't looked into it further. Thanks much for bringing it back to mind. 1) The Lois Mailou Jones and Céline Tabary Studio Group, which I believe had been called the Little Paris Group, held their first annual exhibition at Inspiration House in 1951. In addition to work by Jones and Tabary, the show included paintings by Elizabeth Williamson, Richard Dempsey, Delilah Pierce, and Alma Thomas, among others. The catalogue (sadly, unillustrated) can be found at the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art. 2) In the late 1950s, Madame Evanti (Lillian Evans Tibbs) gave lectures at Inspiration House. I believe her lectures were mentioned in the Baltimore Afro-American. Thanks again. ----------- Seth Feman Ph.D. Candidate, American Studies, College of William & Mary Education Assistant, Smithsonian American Art Museum safema@wm.edu Matthew Gilmore H-DC list co-editor, web editor dc-edit@mail.h-net.msu.edu http://www.h-net.org/~dclist/ [list website] http://www.h-net.org/lists/subscribe.cgi?list=H-DC [subscribe to H-DC] Remember to check http://h-net.msu.edu/cgi-bin/logbrowse.pl?trx=lm&list=H-DC for past list messages.
