She also served as archivist for Gallaudet University and worked as a photo librarian at the Library of Congress. Dr. Wells was a real gem, Zora Jimenez, a masters student studying cultural anthropology said. My research often took me to the Moorland-Spingarn. She was an inspiration and helped me understand my place in an historical field overrun with older, White males. Wells received her masters degree in library and archives administraiton in 1983. She devoted her life to the care and interpretation of historical collections and to the preservation of Washington, D.C. history. She served on the citys Emancipation Board and on the Historical Records Advisory Review Board. Wells, a former board member of the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. served on the program committee of the D.C. Historical Studies Conference. Wells was involved in a number of projects devoted to the care and preservation of historical image collections. She frequently lectured and conducted workshops for general audiences on the care of photographs. Her lectures on photographic history incorporated a unique approach that fused the role of African Americans as subjects, as creators and as critics of images. Wells also penned the forward to Colors of Life, which features works by The Exposure Group: African American Photographers Association. Prior to her death, Wells was compiling photographs for a book that was to depict African American life in the District during the first half of the 20th century. The book will be published by History Press in February 2010. Ms. Wells was a native Washingtonian.
