* Can anyone on this net shed any light on this request? It was originally submitted to the Arlington Historical Society. Karl VanNewkirk **From:* Karen Kimball <karen_kimball@netacc.net> *To:* info@ArlingtonHistoricalSociety.org *Sent:* Tue, November 3, 2009 10:23:40 AM *Subject:* Request for Information re East Falls Church Railway Station, Arlington County I am doing research for an article on the attempt to preserve the old East Falls Church Railway Station that was located in Arlington County. I have reviewed materials in the Virginia Room at the Central Library, but there is a critical time period where I have not located any information. Perhaps you could direct me to some materials or to someone who could fill that gap. The W&OD shut down entirely in 1968. In the 1968, 1969, and 1970 time period, Arlington was contacted about preserving the East Falls Church station since it was on County property. Finally, in October 1970, the station was taken down, board by board, and shipped to Amissville, Virginia, where it was to be reconstructed and become "The Blue Ridge Trading Post." Unfortunately, that never happened. It was shipped, but never reconstructed and, according to one report, the boards were burned as firewood. The station had stained glass windows (reportedly the only known train station to have had stained glass windows), and these were removed before the boards were shipped. I have been unable to locate the whereabouts of those. So there is this gap of information about what happened between the request from the City of Falls Church to Arlington between 1968 and 1969 and whatever decision was made and by whom. That is the gap that I am trying to fill. Any assistance or suggestions you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
