Sent: Monday, November 02, 2009 8:32 AM Subject: Research Queries I have two research queries and, rather than post them separately, it might be easier just to combine them. Any information would be greatly appreciated. You may respond either on the list or privately. 1) In The Miscellaneous Works of David Humphreys (New York, 1804) is a sonnet entitled "On the Murders Committed by the Jacobin Faction in the Early Period of the French Revolution." (p. 237) Can anyone identify when the poem was written and/or whether previously published? 2) In eighteenth-century Europe, there was significant interest in automatons (automata), e.g, von Kempelen's mechanical chess player. Does anyone have any know of any exhibitions of an automaton in eighteenth-century America? Any information would be most greatly appreciated. Robert J.
