The short answer is a casualty is a casualty, whether dead, wounded, captured or missing. Or even any combination, as a person could be both wounded and captured. Missing soldiers might be killed, but not found. They are all casualties. Missing and captured were usually lumped together in reports as the surety of captured versus missing was often lacking. Killed was often a difficult category as many died of their wounds rather quickly. Usually if some was alive at the time the report was taken they were listed as wounded, but they might die after that time. Some reports separate mortally wounded, severely wounded and slightly wounded, but these are rare. I hope this helps. Dr. Thomas G. Clemens Professor of History Hagerstown Community College
