Panel for AHA 2011: Two historians are looking for members to complete a panel for the American Historical Association’s annual meeting in Boston in 2011. The panel will explore the relationship between military service and citizenship in U.S. history. One paper, by Dr. Cinnamon Brown (Westminster College, MO), will examine the ways in which military service and sacrifice in the Battle of New Orleans served as a means of Americanization in the Orleans Territory and fostered new conceptions of citizenship in the young American republic. The second, by Dr. Mark Boulton (University of Wisconsin-Whitewater), explores how military service in the Vietnam Conflict—and the subsequent homecoming experience—affected Vietnam veterans’ sense of attachment to the state and their attitudes toward civic engagement. We are looking for historians whose area of interest falls between these two time periods (roughly 1850 and 1950) and can complement the subject matter. Please contact Mark Boulton at Boultonm@uww.edu, preferably by December 1st, if interested.
