April 15 – 17, 2010 History (1933-1948): What We Choose to Remember CFP Deadline: January 15, 2010 Keynote: Bishop Elias Chacour, the Patriarch of Galilee Archbishop Elias Chacour was born to a Palestinian Christian family in the village of Biram in Upper Galilee in 1939. His family moved to Ibillin, a town in Galilee, when the Israeli authorities evicted the entire village of Biram in 1947. Archbishop Chacour became a citizen of Israel when the state was created in 1948. Archbishop Chacour currently heads an Arabic university located in Ibillin. He is the first Israeli citizen - and the first Hebrew-speaking leader - for the archdiocese. Known for his efforts to promote friendship between Arabs and Jews, Archbishop Chacour has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times. Invited Speakers: John Pawlikowski, Gerald Fogarty, Hala Gores, Michael Marrus, Eugene Fisher, Rabbi Joshua Stampfer, Frank Afranji, Rev. Rodney Page, Deborah Lipstadt Conference: The purpose of this conference is to examine the ideas – legal, philosophical, religious, mythical, medical, and scientific – and the institutions – secular and sacred – that informed and directed as well as opposed and thwarted the unfolding of events from the establishment of the dictatorships in the western world to the establishment of the state of Israel so the lessons of history can guide the future. The conference welcomes submissions of one page abstracts from a wide range of specialties and submissions from established scholars as well as from graduate and undergraduate students. Electronic submissions are preferred and may be sent to powell@up.edu by January 15, 2010.
