[Submitted to the list by Akira Motomura <amotomura@stonehill.edu>. FWIW, the Wikipedia entry on Bank of America (sorry! I know...) claims that the BoA / Nationsbank transaction was technically recorded as a merger and that Lewis was not the CEO at that time. I wonder if perhaps the underlying issue here relates more to brand and public perception than to the absolute size of the entities involved? Just a thought. - ed.] Mitchell, I think that Bank of America's purchase by a Charlotte, NC bank (maybe Nationsbank at the time?) would be another example of a small firm acquiring a big one (and adopting its name). Kenneth Lewis cut his teeth at the NC bank, which grew in a series of acquisitions prior to buying/becoming BofA.
