I am developing a proposal to submit a proposal for a panel at the XVIth
Congress of the International Association of Buddhist Studies to be held at
Dharma Drum Buddhist
College, Taiwan from June 20-25, 2011.
The subject will be Divination and Buddhism
Divination includes such methods as astrology, numerology, Yijing and
its derivatives, lunettes,palm reading, bird flight interpretation and
many others.
Possible topics of interest include but are not limited to:
** Prohibitions against monks practicing divination. Actual
divination practice by monks or nuns -- this could be based on
texts or field work.
** Meaning of the "superpowers" attained by Shakyamuni as he
attained realization.
** Use of Buddhist imagery in divination
I would hope to develop a panel with papers covering divination in a
variety of Buddhist traditions.
