Colleagues, I would like to bring to your attention the following panels of the Buddhist Philosophy Group at next weekend's converence of the AAR, as well as to solicit nominations for the Group's steering committee: Saturday, Nov. 7, 9-11:30, "The Science of Meditation? Findings, Problems, and Future Potential" (jointly sponsored by the Science, Technology, and Religion Group). Panelists: Pierre Rainville, Université de Montréal; Joshua Grant, Université de Montréal; Willoughby Britton, Brown University. Respondents: Francisca Cho, Georgetown University; Daniel Arnold, University of Chicago; John Dunne, Emory University. Presiding: Lea Schweitz, Lutheran School of Theology. Sunday, 1-2:30, "Intercultural Dialogues on Language in Thirteenth- Century Chan, Seon, and Zen Buddhism". Panelists: Jin Park, American University; Steven Heine, Florida International University; Takushi Odagiri, Stanford University. Respondent: Charles Muller, University of Tokyo. Presiding: Dale Wright, Occidental College. Monday, 4-6:30, "Levels of Description in Buddhist Philosophy" (jointly sponsored by the Yogācāra Studies Consultation). Panelists: Martin Adam, McGill University; Douglas Duckworth, East Tennessee State University; Roy Tzohar, Columbia University and Tel Aviv University; Jonathan Gold, Princeton University. Presiding: Daniel Arnold, University of Chicago. The Group's business meeting will be convened Monday evening at 6:00 pm, immediately following the last panel listed above. Among the items of business will be to solicit nominations for people to replace a couple of steering committee members who will be rotating off (with the election from among those nominated to be handled subsequently by e-mail). I would like, then, to solicit nominations for the steering committee positions that will soon be open; nominations (which may include self- nominations) can be submitted at the business meeting itself, or in advance via e-mail. Early nominations are helpful, since that makes it possible to ascertain interest on the part of nominees. The Buddhist Philosophy Group aims to encourage and represent work that philosophically engages thought from any part of the Buddhist world, and is particularly hopeful of better representing East Asian Buddhist traditions in these conversations. It is to be hoped, as well, that members of the steering committee themselves might represent the diversity of AAR membership in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, etc. Note that nominees should be members of the AAR. If you would like to nominate someone, please either plan to attend the Group's business meeting next week, or (better yet) e-mail co-chair John Dunne (jdunne@emory.edu). With thanks for encouraging the flourishing of philosophically engaged work in Buddhist studies, Dan Arnold Co-chair, Buddhist Philosophy Group
