Seminar Organizer: Petra Schweitzer, Shenandoah U; Raina Kostova, Jacksonville State U, Petra Schweitzer, Shenandoah U; Raina Kostova, Jacksonville State U, http://www.acla.org/acla2010/ This panel focuses on autobiographical writings of twentieth-century poets, writers, and critical thinkers who have been exiled or dislocated from their place of origin. Such personal narratives offer a unique and significant contribution to questions concerning the notions of "place," "borders" and "diaspora"; they also frequently attest to personal suffering and shed light on the influence of traumatic experience on the writers' literary, philosophical or theoretical work. How does the relation between writing and remembering manifest itself as the beginning of a discursive (sometimes but not always national) space? How can the transmission of loss or trauma across borders generate a theoretical discursive space? How do these autobiographical narratives redefine space? We welcome papers on topics including but not limited to: writing and remembering, exile and nation, displaced subjects, new identities, perception and consciousness, physical and/vs. psychical realities, the interrelation between private and public voice. **2011 OAH Annual Meeting Call for Presentations Location: Texas Deadline: 2010-02-25 Description: 2011 OAH Annual Meeting Call for Presentations "Americans Divided and United: Multiple and Shifting Solidarities" Thursday, March 17 toSunday March 20, 2011 Hilton Americas-Houston Call for Presentations With the theme of "Americans Divided and United: Multiple and Shifting Solidarities, the Program ... What happens when human life itself becomes an international problem? The questions of defining and regulating biological life have confronted every society - and with the rapid growth of biomedical technologies and techniques of ecological and environmental intervention, they are especially urgent today. What, then, have been the ideas and practices of transnational biopolitics, and how can we periodize them? How have the challenges of managing and optimizing human life contributed to international conflict and cooperation? How have challenges to transnational biopolitics registered at an individual and community level? Specialists from Columbia University will provide commentary. We welcome submissions from all time periods - ancient, medieval, early modern, and modern - and geographic regions. We encourage interdisciplinary research, and although proposals with a historical perspective are particularly welcome, we will also consider contributions from fields including anthropology, economics, literary studies, philosophy, political science and sociology. Limited funding for travel and assistance in arranging accommodation may be available. Graduate students interested in participating should submit a paper abstract of no more than 300 words and a recent CV as email attachments (word or PDF format preferred) by January 18, 2010 to Trey Straussberger, at the following address: jfs2129@columbia.edu. **CFP - PLACING GEOGRAPHY DISCUSSION FORUM IN CO-SPONSORSHIP WITH AAG GEOGRAPHICPERSPECTIVES ON WOMEN (GPOW), CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY & HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY SPECIALTY GROUPS ANNOUNCE: AAG Annual Meeting, Washington D.C., April 14-18, 2010 Session Title: "Living On In Place: The Role of Refugee Camps as a Structuring Force and Form in the Social Organization of Everyday Living Amidst Long-Term Displacement" Organizer: Kevin M. The purpose of the fellowships program is to serve as a catalyst for helping expand the intellectual resources and networking capacities of museums and their personnel. The program supports research about issues of theory and practice in education, curation, exhibition, administration and other museum functions and disciplines. It offers competitively selected individuals an opportunity to study a museological topic of their choice for up-to-six months in residence at the Smithsonian. Through self-designed programs of activities, interviews, readings and observations, fellows consult current museological scholarship while generating their own original research projects, interact with colleagues at the Smithsonian and develop meaningful relationships within the broader Washington, DC cultural community. Residency arrangements are individually structured to meet a fellow's employment situation and research objectives. For now,you¹ll find just one set - cleverly called ³Dam It!² and full of dam-related images (though no beavers). In 2 weeks, we¹ll add a small set of Celilo Falls pictures, with subsequent sets for salmon fishing and waterfalls. The collection grew out of an interest from the Greater Western Library Alliance¹s Digital Collections Committee, which was thinking about how to spotlight the great collections featured in the Western Waters Digital Library. From economy to culture to environment, the great issues of our time require close attention to the dynamic interactions among actors and stakeholders around the world. It is commonly observed that all societies are now part of a global system that is stitched together by far-reaching trade protocols, governance covenants, and communication networks. Although this process of integration engenders dramatic new opportunities for cooperation and development, it is also characterized by profound inequities and uncertainties that breed dramatic new tensions and conflicts. Globalization is furthermore distinguished by challenges to previous loyalties and affinities, as questions of belonging and citizenship assume new meanings in an era of accelerating flows of people, goods, and capital across national frontiers. Originally published on a quarterly basis, global-e has switched to publishing a new issue every few weeks in early 2009 with the aim of providing a forum for timely commentary regarding global events, processes, and issues. Each issue features a brief essay authored by leading scholars and practitioners, offering provocative reflections on a range of topics with the aim of stimulating discussion among the global studies community. As each new edition is posted on the web, email announcements will be delivered to individual subscribers and to listservs associated with professional and scholarly organizations interested in global studies. We aim both to encourage circulation of commentary essays and to stimulate discussion among readers. Accordingly, each essay will be open to reader response and deliberation. Commentaries focus on public issues, theoretical debates, methodological challenges, and curricular concerns. Our aim is to provoke discussion and to provide commentators the opportunity to circulate their ideas in a new format. The journal is managed by a collaboration of global studies programs at the Universities of Illinois, North Carolina, Wisconsin-Madison, and Wisconsin-Milwaukee. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FYI- Borderland ANNOUNCEMENTS draws sources from: H-Gender MidEast, H-Histsex, H-Announce, H-Grad, H-HistGeog, H-Human-Rights and H-Empire, H-Texas, H-LatAm, H-Migration, H-West, H-Ethnic, H-Ideas, H-Memory, H-Asia, H-AmIndian, H-Africa, H-Women and H-World.
