I'd like to second the recommendation to check out the ASFS. They publish a journal, Food, Culture, & Society, and membership offers a discount on another very interesting publication called Gastronomica. They also sponsor an annual conference--I went to the one a few years back in Victoria, British Columbia, and let me just say that the usual history conference buffets don't have raw oyster tastings. Or local prawns. Or salmon tastings. The syllabi on their website are very informative. Anyone in the NYC area is welcome to email me off-list for local food/history connections.
