Hello Foodies, Marcy Norton's recent book Sacred Gifts, Profane Pleasures: A History of Tobacco and Chocolate in the Atlantic World. Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2008 examines the sacred and social New World origins of these two commodities and then looks at the ways their consumption was modified and commercialized by multiple European empires. It is a thoroughly researched and cleanly written book. Individual chapters would serve undergraduates well. As a guilty pleasure of food, film, and nationality, I would recommend "Babette's Feast", the 1987 Danish Film that won Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards. Best, Jesse Cromwell Ph.D. Candidate The University of Texas at Austin
