H-ASIA 3 November 1998 Names of Indian Aircraft Carriers ********************************** From: Ranes C Chakravorty <firstname.lastname@example.org> With regards to the recent query about the names of the Indian aircraft carriers, Vikrant does not have any specific historic/literary allusion. It means powerful, victorious, heroic etc. in Sanskrit. Viraat means huge. It was also the name of a famous king of Matsya in the Mahabharata. The five Pandav brothers spent some time in disguise under his protection during their period of banishment. Viraat became a friend and fought for the Pandavas during the Kuru-Pandava conflict. Another and much less important king of the same name is also mentioned. I would doubt that the carrier was named after the king - the name probably was just to indicate its massive size. I did not want to burden you with the details of king Viraat - should be available in any good translation of the Mahabharata. ================================== -- To post to H-ASIA simply send your message to: <H-ASIA@h-net.msu.edu> For holidays or short absences send post to: <email@example.com> with message: SET H-ASIA NOMAIL Upon return, send post with message SET H-ASIA MAIL H-ASIA WEB HOMEPAGE URL: http://h-net.msu.edu/~asia/
