H-ASIA ************************************************** From: Michael Ashkenazi <Ashkenazi@gyosei.ac.uk> Subject: Re: H-ASIA: "Apple" Responds on Script Issues ---- I think that this problem is, once again, a return to the fundamentals of Mac usage: Why should I (or anyone) pay more for a system if it does not meet my requirements? I am now on my third Mac, and contemplating moving to a G3. But I won't spend th necessary £1,500 if I know that (a) my peripherals will need to be changed as well; (b) my application software (Word, ClarisWorks) will have to be replaced, and (c) my language utilities (JLK) will all have to go at the same time. While I am irritated, frustrated, and continually annoyed by having to use Windoze (in my office), there is definitiely a limit on my will and ability to stay with Apple's products. I will do so if I am guaranteed that the satisfaction I get from using Apple products overweigh the expense. If the use of Asian scripts will require me to invest in a completely new suite (hardware and software) because Apple is chasing some sort of grail of their own devising, then I will put up the £1,000 pounds necessary, absorb the cost, and go to Windoze. It seems that Apple has NOT learned from its marketing debacles and loss of markeyt share in the past few years: if you don't keep your current customers happy, you are going to have to spoend TEN TIMES AS MUCH getting new ones. I, at least, am proud to say I don;t have any brand loyalty: I select on the basis of a complex calculation of cost, effect, and percieved convenience. I think every one else does the same, and if Apple does not understand or cater to that, they will simply have to go to the wall. BTW: at least in the UK, there are 3 Mac magazines (MacWorld US, MacWorld UK, and MacFormat) which are doing very well, thank you. ============== Dr. Michael Ashkenazi Gyosei College, Reading, UK ===========================================
