H-ASIA November 23, 2009 International Teyyam Workshop, Kannur, Kerala, India, April 18-24, 2010 (x-post H-Folk) ************************************************************************ From: Catherine Hiebert Kerst <cker@LOC.GOV> Announcement: International Workshop on Teyyam, to be held in Kerala, India The Folklore Fellows of Malabar (Trust) is hosting a week-long workshop on Theyam in Kannur, Kerala, India from April 18-24, 2010. Teyyam is a part of the native religion of North Kerala, consisting of various ritual performances, myths, drumming, dance forms, and distinctive facial make-up, headgear, and costumes. It is found in numerous variants in communities throughout North Kerala. This workshop will introduce Teyyam to scholars and those interested in native/local culture. It will include Teyyam performances in their natural context, discussions, lectures by eminent teyyam scholars, and tours to important teyyam shrines. The cost for foreign participants is US $1000, for accommodation (including a one-day stay in a village household) and food during the workshop. Admission is restricted to 25 participants. Those interested in the workshop are urged to register early. The deadline for registration is December 15, 2009.
