Hollywood Films on Taiwan (Query)
*************
From: Yuko Kikuchi <y.kikuchi@chelsea.arts.ac.uk>
Dear list,
I wonder if anybody knows about Hollywood films on Taiwan or Taiwanese
issues produced in the 1950s-60s. Is there any equivalent of ‘Sayonara’
or
‘The World of Suzie Wong’ set in Taiwan? There have been many studies on
the culture during the Cold War and the American representation of Asia,
but I haven’t come across anything specifically addressing Taiwan,
therefore I would be grateful if anybody can kindly let me know.

Ed. Note: This would be of interest to other list members and would
therefore responses to the list would be welcomed. This period
(1950s-1960s) represented the first decades of the Cold War and was a time
in which Taiwan struggled to regain its infrastructure and establish an
economic footing after the ravages of WWII, especially with the loss of
its major trading partner Japan. I therefore have doubts as to Hollywood
interest in representing Taiwan as such in commercial movies. Linda Dwyer
