H-ASIA February 3, 2008 Response to query on Chinese Immigrants in Africa ************************************************************************ From: KOH KENG WE <lindgeist@yahoo.co.uk> Dear Doreen and other interested colleagues, You might want to look at the work of Prof. LI Anshan in relation to current work of Chinese scholars on the Chinese in South Africa. You can find some works via this link: http://www.google.com.sg/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&channel=s&hl=en&q=%E6%9D%8E%E5%AE%89%E5%B1%B1+%E9%9D%9E%E6%B4%B2+%E5%8D%8E%E4%BA%BA&meta=&btnG=Google+Search You can also find various works in Chinese on the Chinese in Africa at http://www.library.ohiou.edu/subjects/shao/shaoresources.html under "Database for Publications on Overseas Chinese". Some of them will deal with the question of overseas Chinese policy and post-1979 migration to Africa. You can do a search in the keyword field using "Africa". For broader studies of Chinese overseas policy, you might also want to contact Prof. CHENG Xi and various other Chinese scholars. You can locate her email address through our database under "Database of Scholars and Librarians". You might want to look at the works of Prof. PARK Yoon Jung and Prof. Karen Harris for works in English dealing specifically with South Africa. Their publications and contact details can also be found in our database. You might also want to look at the Journal Hua Qiao Hua Ren Li Shi Yan Jiu. for the latter, the online versions are available through Wanfang Data/COJ or the CNKI/CAJ journal databases. If you have trouble getting access to articles or to do searches, please let us know. There is also a recent 2 or 3 volume work on the qiaowu studies in China. We can provide you with a more comprehensive list if you wish. Another possible gold mine of information would be the different "qiaowu" websites or "qiao wang", at least in terms of "overseas Chinese policies" and reports on Chinese in different parts of the world. Please let us know how we can assist you further. If you have problems locating any of the works that you find, please let us know (you can email me at koh@ohio.edu).
